Causes of Yeast Infections

Yeast infections are caused by the agrowth of too many yeast cells inside the vagina. These microscopic fungi are called Candida. There are a few factros that can cause this excessive growth of vaginal yeast, including:

  • Being overweight
  • The use of corticosteroids
  • An impaired immune system
  • Having diabetes
  • Having high estrogen levels
  • Using certain antibiotics

Symptoms of Yeast Infections

Extreme itchiness in or around the vagina is the most common symptom of a vaginal yeast infection. Other symptoms may include:

  • Vaginal discharge
  • Burning and swelling of the vagina
  • Pain during urination and/or sex

A woman is more likely to experience these symptoms a week before their menstrual period. Since these symptoms can also be an indication of a sexually transmitted infection, it is advised that women see a doctor.

Treatment for Yeast Infections

The most common treatment for a yeast infection is an antifungal medicine. These antifungal medicines can be purchased at drug stores without a prescription. The antifungal medicine comes in the form of creams, tablets, or suppositories that are inserted into the vagina. For the best treatment option, contact a doctor for more information.

Preventing Yeast Infections

There are a few steps that can be taken to prevent yeast infections:

  • Eating a healthy, balanced diet
  • Controlling diabetes
  • Avoiding unnecessary antibiotics
  • Avoid scented feminine products
  • Avoid douching, this can remove some of the normal bacteria that can prevent infections
  • After using the bathroom, always wipe from front to back
